In early may, we planted potatoes in the garden of Soviet Dacha in Moscow. At the begining of June we hilled it to have more tubers. In early July, the potato has started to bloom and now it bears berries.

Potatoes were introduced in Russia by Tsar Peter the Great, who brought potatoes from Holland in the early 18th century.

Russian peasants were afraid to grow unknown plant. There have been several cases of poisoning. The fact that the berries of the potato are poisonous, but it looks like small tomatoes.

Some Russian peasants ate thees berries and received severe poisoning.

The potatoes grew well in Russia and rescued in years of poor harvest of grain crops, it replaced the porridge on the table of the peasants. However, Tsar had to go to the trick to make potato popular.

Peter I ordered to plant potatoes in a few fields and protect them. The trick was that the protection went away every evening and left the field without supervision. So he managed to capture the interest of the farmers and spread the potatoes in Russia.

Currently it is difficult to imagine Russian cuisine without potatoes.

In May we planted potatoes of two different varieties and now we've got some bright and red potatoes.
